It might be the turning point in the movie, Soul Surfer. It might not. But when Carrie Underwood’s character provides encouragement to surfer Bethany Hamilton (as played by Anna Sophia Robb), it feels like that’s when the movie goes from tragedy to triumph. “I don’t know why terrible things happen to us sometimes,” she says in the trailer posted on Entertainment Weekly’s website. “But I have to believe that something good’s going to come out of this.” The film is based on Hamilton’s real life story of losing her left arm in a shark attack and then — after seeing how inspiring she is to people all over the world — she gets back in the water. (The fan-mail scene alone made me start to cry.) This is Underwood’s first feature film, and all I’ve seen is the trailer, but it really does look so good. Good in a you-can-do-anything kind of way. Soul Surfer will be in theaters everywhere on April 8.
