OFFSTAGE: Taylor Swift Is a Civil Wars Superfan

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

Taylor Swift was at a concert Wednesday night (Feb. 2) in Nashville. She even bought a band T-shirt because she is a self-described superfan. And then she went home and listened to the band’s breakout song over and over on her record player. So must you instantly love this band, the Civil Wars, if you love Swift? I haven’t quite embraced the band’s haunting sound yet. It is music that the duo calls modest and minimalist on their website. But this is not just some fleeting one-night thing for Swift. She’s been tweeting about this band for a while and included their “Poison and Wine” song on her official iTunes playlist. She said, “I think this is my favorite duet. It’s exquisite.” It’s a little more poetic and paradoxical than most country or Americana music, with lyrics like, “I don’t love you, but I always will.” Go listen and see what you think. And if you want to see the kind of show Swift saw and buy the T-shirt she bought, you’d better hurry. Most of their upcoming shows are sold out. Part of that could be the Swift Effect. Or just that they are that good. But there are a couple of shows in Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina that still have tickets left.

Alison makes her living loving country music. She's based in Chicago, but she's always leaving her heart in Nashville.
