OFFSTAGE: Taylor Swift Raps a Lot Cleaner Than Nicki Minaj

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

All I can say is, thank God, Taylor Swift knows when to edit herself. I found a video clip of Swift at Nashville radio station WRVW (107.5 The River) on Billboard‘s viral video vault, and the crew at the station were letting her play program director for a day. And since the station has a CHR format, she chose to play rapper Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass” from the Pink Friday album. “I’ve been listening to it on repeat, and I really freak my friends out because I can recite every single lyric to the rap,” she admits. And that’s when the DJ asks her to sing along. She refuses, saying, “That’s for the car.” But he convinces her to rap, and she does a clean little section of the song. And it appears it is the only clean section of the song. If you and anyone in your family are easily offended — or young and impressionable — I strongly recommend against playing Minaj’s version of the song. Swift’s version is good, though, even if she says, “I just rapped a cappella very badly.” Not anywhere near half as bad as the real thing, though.

Alison makes her living loving country music. She's based in Chicago, but she's always leaving her heart in Nashville.
