OFFSTAGE: Radio Station’s Carrie Underwood Ban Was Unreal

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

There never really was a Carrie Underwood ban because Ottawa’s 105.3 Kiss FM doesn’t even play country music. So it was just a joke or stunt, then? Not funny. After it was announced Thursday (Feb. 10) that Ottawa’s Mike Fisher was moving to Tennessee to slip into his new No. 12 Nashville Predators jersey, the Toronto Sun reported that the radio station vowed, “Someone is going to pay for the betrayal to our community and that someone is Underwood.” According to the newspaper, the station also proclaimed, “We know Mike Fisher is not to blame for this trade but feel he was lured away from Ottawa by a country music superstar. Sure, she’s pretty. Yes, she can sing. But can she play hockey? Can she put one on the top shelf with a slap shot? No!” The station added, “This is a wretching announcement and the city is completely upset. He’s been here for 10 years, he’s the second most popular player and it’s awful.” But then when things got ugly and Facebook followers started ranting and threatening to change the pre-sets in their cars, the station posted their “my bad” mea culpa: “Thanks for all your calls, e-mails and Facebook messages. Yesterday we declared a ‘ban’ on Carrie Underwood’s music. As regular listeners we want to thank you for realizing this was our ‘tongue in cheek’ way of saying goodbye to Mike Fisher — as we do not play Carrie Underwood’s music. Mike was the heart and soul of the Senators and our city’s finest ambassador. We will miss him and Carrie — Ottawa’s first couple and wish them great success and happiness in their future. So long Mike! Thanks for the memories!” I didn’t think the ban was funny. But when a publicity stunt backfires? That’s hysterical. View photos of Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher.
