OFFSTAGE: New Natalie Maines Music Covers Old Beach Boys

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

My heart damn near skipped a beat when I heard Natalie Maines had a new song on iTunes. Could this be the beginning of a Dixie Chicks comeback? Especially since the band’s Shut Up and Sing documentary is on the verge of its CMT debut on March 26? Well, that was just wishful thinking. Because her “new” song is just a remake of the Beach Boys’ 1966 much-loved hit song “God Only Knows.” Maines recorded it for the March 20 finale of HBO’s Big Love, the series about a polygamist family in Utah. Her keyboard-heavy arrangement doesn’t have quite the signature sound that the Beach Boys’ classic did. But vocally, Maines is all good. There are not many folks who could match Carl Wilson’s voice on this tune, but Maines comes pretty close. And I’ll take any bits and pieces of Dixie Chicks I can get.
