OFFSTAGE: Keith Urban’s Daughter Curious About James Brown

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

How do you explain James Brown to a 2-year-old? There really is no explanation, Keith Urban determined. After performing “Without You” during Monday’s (March 28) visit to The Ellen DeGeneres Show, he sat down to talk about family and babies and singing. When DeGeneres asked if his toddler, Sunday Rose, was a good singer, Urban said, “She does like singing. She sings all the time.” And to make his point about her good ear for music, he told a story about a car ride they took over the weekend. “She’s sitting in the back and the radio’s down low, and she said, ’Why you say, ’Hey’? I said, ’What?’ She said, ’Why you say, ’Hey’? I said, ’I didn’t say hey.’ She’s like, ’No, the man on the radio say hey,'” he said. And after he turned the volume up, it was James Brown singing all kinds of “Hey!” Urban told DeGeneres he couldn’t explain it, but I think one thing is very clear. Sunday Rose is already showing signs of being some kind of musical genius.

Alison makes her living loving country music. She's based in Chicago, but she's always leaving her heart in Nashville.
