Soul Surfer, a new movie that features Carrie Underwood in her first film role, earned $11.1 million over the weekend. The film earned $5,014 per theatre, the best of any wide release, according to The Wall Street Journal. The inspirational film tells the story of surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost an arm to a shark attack. Underwood plays Hamilton’s youth minister. Hamilton and actress AnnaSophia Robb, who portrays her in the movie, appeared at the ACM Awards earlier this month. The film received an A-plus rating from CinemaScore, a polling organization that asks viewers to assign a letter grade to new movies in order to project the projects’ earnings.
