OFFSTAGE: John Rich Stakes His Territory

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

John Rich is a team player on Celebrity Apprentice, but there are a couple things he will not do. He won’t babysit and he is not willing to pull Gary Busey out of the quicksand. That’s what he said on last night’s (April 17) episode when the actor was made project manager on a task to promote Omaha Steaks. Rich struggled with Busey’s questions, ideas, phone manners and overall management style. “I’m here to be a tool in the toolbox,” said Rich. “I will do anything the man asks me to do.” But it doesn’t bode well for the men’s team to have Busey at the helm. Rich is an idea guy so his ideas make the most sense. But there was really no getting through to Busey. Like Rich said, “We have been locked in a room with a mad man.” And later, tempers got hot when all the men started acting like 13-year-old girls. “I’m nobody’s boy. You just don’t call another man ‘boy,’ and expect there to be no repercussions,” Rich said after yet another fight with Busey, who later denied calling him “boy.” When it was all over, the women’s team won. That meant Donald Trump finally had the opportunity to fire Busey. He’d foreshadowed that decision earlier in the show when he said Busey was “either a genius or a moron.” Overall, the steak episode was well done, with a big ol’ side of crazy.
