OFFSTAGE: “Remind Me” Reminds Me of Marriage

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood have really done it this time. “Remind Me,” their new duet, makes me think they’ve been reading the minds of every married couple out there. (And by “married,” I mean for a “married for a while.” Not just crazy affectionate newlyweds.) I mean, did they really need to rub it in this hard? The lyrics are about how they used to make out in crowd until someone told them to “get a room.” And how they don’t want to settle for “good, not great.” And about the times they were kissing goodbye and couldn’t stop. Or when she’d wake up in his old T-shirt. I almost start crying just hearing it in my head. It’s a sad, sad song for anyone who has ever watched a love go from “get a room” to “good, not great.” But I guess if there’s some wisdom in the song, it’s this line toward the end: “If you still love me, don’t just assume I know.” That’s a reminder we can all use.
