OFFSTAGE: Taylor Swift’s Top Three Songs (For Right Now)

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

Even though she was inspired to be a country singer because of the girls who came before her (Shania Twain, Faith Hill, the Dixie Chicks), Taylor Swift’s tastes in music seems to have evolved. I don’t think that means she’s outgrowing her first country loves. I think she just has a soundtrack in her head at all times, and as new music comes along, she gets excited about that. For the moment, anyway. And so she told Teen Vogue the three songs she’s attached to right now are “She’s So High” by Tal Bachman, “You Learn” by Alanis Morissette and “Shot in the Dark” by Augustana. (She’s been a fan of that band for years. I remember interviewing Swift in 2008 , and their “Sweet and Low” was her ringtone.) But I know for a fact Swift still reveres country music and the legends who make it because she also told the magazine her performance jitters come out when she knows they are watching. “I do [get nervous]. But only if I’m not sure what the audience thinks of me, like at award shows. I never look down at the front row,” she said. “My heroes watching [equal] nerves!”

Alison makes her living loving country music. She's based in Chicago, but she's always leaving her heart in Nashville.
