OFFSTAGE: It’s Not About the Money, Money, Money for Little Big Town

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

Either “Price Tag” is Phillip Sweet’s all-time favorite song, or he’s a quick study. How else could you explain how the B.o.B. rap solo of this Jessie J pop song comes so naturally to Sweet in this impromptu bus jam session in Madison, Neb. It is one of Little Big Town’s Scattered, Smothered and Covered videos, where the foursome take on popular songs and give them an acoustic country makeover to showcase their pure musical talent. This one only has the band’s four singers, plus a minibacking band of mandolin, upright bass and a drum. And Karen Fairchild on lead vocals, which reminds me that, damn, that girl does have some serious pipes. And while I was never a fan of the song before, it’s certainly stuck in my head now and forever. (Fun fact: Jessie J co-wrote Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the U.S.A.”)

Alison makes her living loving country music. She's based in Chicago, but she's always leaving her heart in Nashville.
