OFFSTAGE: Keith Urban’s “Long Hot Summer” vs. Back-to-School Bliss

Damn that Keith Urban. Just when I thought it was safe to revel in all this back-to-school bliss, he now has me pining for summer. Why now? This is the time of year when I usually want to put beach towels, flip flops and sunscreen away and get the book bags, graph paper and highlighters out of the storage closet. It is honestly my favorite time of year. Normally. But with Urban’s “Long Hot Summer” video playing constantly, it’s kind of making me rethink my decision to put summer into immediate retirement. I’m not sure I had enough fun this summer. Seeing him on some California beach with his band, their amps in the sand, makes me want some summer back. Maybe I brushed the sand from my life too early this year. Because I think what Urban is saying in this song is that I need to go swimming, surfing, get a tattoo on my torso and get my convertible back out of storage, put my feet up on the dashboard and sing along with the radio. Is that what you hear in the song?

Fun fact: As far as I know, this is the first time Urban has done a lyrical reprise. The first and last lines of the song are the same. “I can’t sleep. I’m just lying here thinkin’ ’bout you.”
