OFFSTAGE: Little Big Town Smothers and Covers Jackson 5

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

If you close your eyes for this video, you might think it’s actually 1970 again and a 12-year-old Michael Jackson is singing instead of Little Big Town’s Kimberly Schlapman. That’s how dead-on her lead vocals are on this cover of the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back.” This latest installment in the country quartet’s Scattered, Smothered & Covered series is so good for so many reasons. Schlapman’s voice, obviously. Then the “stage” they chose — the plush seats of the Carson Center in Paducah, Ky. Plus, the backing instruments (upright bass, drums, mandolin, tambourine and a baby rattle) and the band’s reverence for the classic Motown hit. Every time I see one of these cover videos, I wonder: Is there anything Little Big Town can’t own?
