OFFSTAGE: The Weird Chemistry of Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that's happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

Is Blake Shelton seriously the reason God made Oklahoma? Hell, no. But when Monday (Aug. 29) night's Dateline ran the 2005 clip of Shelton and Miranda Lambert singing David Frizzell and Shelly West's No. 1 single from 1981, "You're the Reason God Made Oklahoma," it sure looks like Lambert thinks so. She openly admitted there was a "weird chemistry" between them that she had never felt before. The problem was that while Lambert and Shelton had kind of an instant connection going on during the song, Shelton was already connected. To his wife, Kaynette. But like Lambert said, "I knew he was married. I knew better. We spent time together, we were like, 'We can be friends.'" And then she added she decided to stop spending time with him before those feelings got any worse. But just about five months after they met, Shelton filed for divorce from Kaynette, whom he married in 2003. And then about five years after that divorce, Shelton and Lambert were married. It's very tough to say what any of us would have done in their shoes. What is the best course of action when you find your soulmate, but he's already taken? Should you walk away, even though he could be the one true love of your life? Is knowing it's wrong powerful enough to stop you from doing what feels so right? And how ironic would it have been if Shelton's ex-wife had turned out to be a crazy ex-wife, full of gunpowder and lead and kerosene, who made the front page of the Turner Town Gazette?
