OFFSTAGE: Michael Martin Murphey Serenades Newlywed Lauren Lauren

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that's happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

The big wedding news this past weekend was that the son of Ralph Lauren married the niece of former President George W. Bush. But because it's my job to find the country music news in any given event, what I think must've been the stand-out moment in that beautiful-people celebration was when Michael Martin Murphey performed during the reception. He's the one who had a No. 1 hit "What's Forever For" in 1982 -- the song about how good love is so hard to come by and how if love never lasts forever, then what's forever for? Great, great country song, as was his 1975 ghost-on-a-horse-in-a-blizzard "Wildfire." Murphey was also named the ACM's best new male vocalist in 1983, so it's not like he was a one-hit wonder. Anyway, he's still making cowboy music, which made him the best choice to help serenade David Lauren and Lauren Bush (who is now officially Lauren Bush-Lauren, but how can you not think of her as just Lauren Lauren?) after their western-themed ceremony at the 17,000-acre Double RL Ranch in the Rocky Mountains. The dress code was black tie with a Western twist. Bush's tweet the morning of the wedding was, "Good morning world... I'm getting married today! Yay! Xo."
