OFFSTAGE: Taylor Swift: No Pabulum, No Cages

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

In the gigantic profile of Nashville record exec Scott Borchetta in this week’s Billboard magazine, there are a few great quotes about why Taylor Swift is who she is and how she got there. A couple are from Borchetta, who talks about breaking the Swift sound and getting her on the radio with “Tim McGraw” back in 2006. “Putting out safe records puts people out of business,” he says, adding that his industry idols took gambles and “didn’t get here by churning out more pabulum that we think radio will play.” Then he added, “I will shoot myself before I do that.” Swift agrees with Borchetta about his out-of-the-box way of making music. “He let me make this record without feeling like I had any sort of cage I had to operate within,” she said. It’s no wonder the two of them are on top of their worlds.
