OFFSTAGE: Dierks Bentley: Bullets and Bananas

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

Guns? In Texas? And it’s not a Miranda Lambert video? How weird is that? This time around, Dierks Bentley and a couple of friends are the ones with all the firearms. They are out in the middle of nowhere (OK, in Midland, Texas) enjoying the great outdoors and shooting what he calls “some interesting targets.” First, he grabs a beer in one hand and a shotgun in the other and says, “This is how they do it in Texas.” And it’s all in good fun as they start shooting whatever’s in the bed of the pick-up truck. Like bananas. Seriously, they are shooting at a banana. And the whole time they’re doing all this shooting, Bentley’s take on “Senor (Tales of Yankee Power)” is playing. It’s a 1978 Bob Dylan song that Bentley covered on his Up on the Ridge album. And, as usual, the Bentley cover is better on so many levels, in my opinion, than the original.
