OFFSTAGE: Rascal Flatts Had No Clue About Opry Invitation

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

Jay DeMarcus told his wife to stay home. “I told my wife, I said, ’Just stay home. We’re only doing three songs. It’s just a short segment,'” he said in a radio interview about Rascal Flatts’ ordinary-turned-extraordinary night at the Grand Ole Opry on Tuesday (Sept. 27). But Allison DeMarcus came to the show anyway, right before the band took the stage. “She was just like, ’Well, I put the baby (10-month-old Madeline) to bed, and the nurse is there, so I just came on out.’ And that was the only thing that was a little weird, but I had no clue. Even when Vince came out onstage, I thought he was just messing with Joe Don [Rooney],” he said. Vince Gill extended the invitation right after the band played their 2004 mega hit “Bless the Broken Road” and right before they performed Gill’s “Whenever You Come Around” together. Rascal Flatts will be formally inducted on Oct. 8, and I’m sure Allison DeMarcus will be there that night, too.

Alison makes her living loving country music. She's based in Chicago, but she's always leaving her heart in Nashville.
