OFFSTAGE: Lady Antebellum Calls Saturday Night Live the Litmus Test

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

Earlier this month, when I had a chance to catch up with Lady Antebellum, Dave Haywood told me what night he’s most excited to own. And that’s Saturday (Oct. 1) when the band will make its Saturday Night Live debut. “SNL was always like the litmus test of who made it,” he told me. “I would always stay up late, whether I was allowed to or not, to see Nirvana and Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins and bands like that. For me, that was when somebody made it. And it gives me chills to think there’s some teenage kid who stays up and goes, ’Oh, my God. I’ve kind of heard of them.’ That’s such a huge achievement.” When I asked what his favorite SNL moments were, he said he was obsessed with all the Chris Farley stuff. “Like when he was Matt Foley, the motivational speaker who lived in a van down by the river,” he said. And in a recent radio interview, Haywood and bandmate Hillary Scott agreed that just walking the halls and watching the SNL rehearsals will be pretty surreal.
