OFFSTAGE: Taylor Swift: 21-Year-Old 2.0

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

That’s what the New Yorker calls her — a 21-year-old 2.0. Like she’s the next version of a girl her age. They also say Taylor Swift radiates unjaded sincerity. That she approaches her career with the seriousness of a CEO. That she beats herself up if she sleeps in too late. And that she panicked when she ran into Kanye West at the annual Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute’s gala. But not much of that is really news to the country fans who have been watching her rapid-but-graceful rise to the top. What I did find newsy was the part about how useful Swift’s iPhone is to her songwriting. According to the story, she sings melodies onto her iPhone as voice memos and types in lyrics in the notes app. I love hearing how young artists are using new technologies in new ways. Because nowhere does it say that every great country song has to be written on a cocktail napkin in some honky-tonk on Nashville’s Lower Broadway at 2 in the morning. I should mention that you have to buy the magazine to read the entire story.

Alison makes her living loving country music. She's based in Chicago, but she's always leaving her heart in Nashville.
