OFFSTAGE: Kid Rock and Martina McBride “Care” Enough to Include Fan

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

Shannon Luft has to call in sick today. She will be busy being in the Kid Rock and Martina McBride video for “Care.” The song is one of Kid Rock’s best yet, about how you can’t always change things and solve all the world’s problems, but the least you can do is care. And Luft really cares. “My father is a melanoma survivor. We lost my husband’s grandfather in 2007 to colon cancer,” she told the local news where she lives in Midland, Mich. She won this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in a local contest for people who volunteer for nonprofit organizations. Her name was drawn as the lucky winner, although she doesn’t know what she’s going to say to Kid Rock when she meets him. “I don’t know. This happened so quickly. I’m shocked. I don’t know. I’m really excited though. I’m actually a big fan of the song. The lyrics are so powerful,” Luft said. The video is being shot today, somewhere secret in Michigan. (I heard the Motor City vicinity, but I haven’t confirmed that.) And Luft admitted, “Now I’m going to have to call in sick Thursday.” Maybe, to make amends, she could score her boss a couple tickets to Kid Rock’s Saturday (Oct. 29) appearance in Detroit at the Cattle Baron’s Ball , a fundraiser American Cancer Society.
