OFFSTAGE: Charles Kelley Wants Motown at Hillary Scott’s Wedding

When you are fresh off your own win for SESAC’s songwriter of the year award, it’s probably kind of daunting to pick out someone else’s music that worthy enough to have performed at your own wedding. So when I talked with Scott on the red carpet right before the CMA Awards on Wednesday (Nov. 9) evening, I asked her how she and fiancé Chris Tyrrell were going to approach the music. Traditional? Country? Somewhere in between? “That is the one thing I haven’t really thought about yet. Chris and I need to sit and talk through that,” she told me. “We have songs that mean a lot to us as a couple that will probably work their way into the ceremony, and definitely the reception. But all the specifics? We haven’t even gotten there yet.” Charles Kelley yelled out his recommendation, though. “Motown band, Motown band,” he chanted.
