When a show is considered dark, supernatural, goth-horror and has a parental block on my television because of its mature content, I tend to think there won't be much country music on it. But that is not the case with HBO's True Blood. I caught up with Craig Campbell when I was in Nashville last week, and he told me the show used his song "Family Man" in a recent episode. It's hardly a blood-sucking anthem, so I had to know what the scene was all about. "Well, Jessica, the red-headed vampire, is dating Hoyt, who is human, and they got in this big argument," he explained. "So she ran out to the truck and got in to leave, and my 'Family Man' was on the radio. She wasn't really paying much attention to the song, but I was." Campbell told me he is a big fan of the show, but he has no idea how they chose his song. "They came to us. I'm so glad they did," he told me. "I love the fictionality of the show. How it's just so not real." It's not that shocking that the show uses a little country here and there because when it debuted in 2008, the music supervisor told Billboard magazine, "The soundtrack will be swampy, bluesy and spooky." And the theme song for the show is a semi-country one, "Bad Things," by Jace Everett, who won a BMI Cable Award for it in 2009. Looks like vampires, just like everybody else, have gone country.
