OFFSTAGE: Vince Gill Shops Like a Man

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

Today was a good day for the Vince Gill fan in me. And, I must admit, for the housewife in me, too. That’s because the December issue of Good Housekeeping came today, and Gill is on the cover. In a Santa hat. Looking like a million bucks.

Inside, he admits that he shops for Christmas like a real man: “I’m a true guy. Christmas Eve, I’m at Walmart trying to finish up. Procrastinator, big time. Sometimes it’s cash and gift cards from me.”

The story covers everything from the big country breakfast he loves to make with his wife Amy Grant on Christmas morning, to more sordid stuff like how the rumors were not true about he and Grant having an affair while they were both married to others. (Gill tells the magazine they didn’t start dating until they were divorced from their first spouses.)

One of his ideas that I’m going to steal is his Yankee Swap, or Dirty Santa, that he does with his whole brood a couple days before Christmas. “You draw numbers and take turns picking gifts. What you pick is your gift, but somebody who comes after you can take it,” he says, adding with a laugh, “one year, I got a talking scale, something I really wanted.”
