OFFSTAGE: Demi Lovato’s First Country Song

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

If you’re the daughter of a former Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader , like Demi Lovato is, I think you kind of owe it to the world to be a country songwriter. Maybe it’s just a Texas thing. Maybe not. But either way, the teen actress and pop singer is giving it a go.

Over the New Year’s holiday, she tweeted , “Wrote my first country song today.” So is this her attempt at being Sonny With a Chance of Country? Lovato is no longer a part of that Disney sitcom (now renamed So Random!) that made her a household named with kids and tweens, and she is focusing on her music instead.

Lovato tweets about music often, sometimes randomly saying things like “What Hurts the MostRascal Flatts” or “Kenny ChesneyThe Good Stuff .” She recently put this one out there: “Crazy GirlEli Young Band.” That is a phenomenal song by the phenomenal Texas-based band. So maybe her Texas roots are behind her interest in country music. I do hope that her songwriting is fueled more by what Dallas calls country than what Hollywood calls country.

Alison makes her living loving country music. She's based in Chicago, but she's always leaving her heart in Nashville.
