OFFSTAGE: How David Nail Celebrated His No. 1 Song

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

Normally, David Nail would be celebrating with a pair of reissued Nike Air Jordans. That’s how he likes to remember the big moments in his life, so having his first No. 1 song (“Let It Rain”), would seem to be the perfect rationale for buying a new pair. “I can remember being a kid and knowing better than to ever ask my parents to buy them. So I always said, ’If I’m ever in a position that I can afford them — they reissue all these old models from when I was a kid — I wanna do it,” Nail told me Thursday (Jan. 26) when he was in Chicago for a concert. “I don’t wear them. Just once in a while, I’ll go upstairs and pull them out and look at them. Just to relive the moment when I was a kid and I’d go into Foot Locker and just hold them and imagine what it would be like if I could have them.” He has 11 pairs of the Nikes, but this time around, he couldn’t get the reissues because when he went online to get them, he told me Foot Locker’s site just froze up and shut down. So instead, he bought himself a nice watch. A TAG Heuer. “I couldn’t fathom spending that much. I’m really tight with money. When I was a kid and I didn’t have any money, I’d blow through it. But once you start making a little bit, I’m paranoid to spend it,” he admitted. He did say he has no buyer’s remorse over the watch but wishes he had not bought anything else. “I bought a pair of Diesel jeans, and I was like, ’Man, I didn’t need these.'” Once Nail heard that his song was officially in the top spot, he and his wife Catherine went to a Nashville Predators game and then dinner with friends. But for the sake of his collection, I just hope when his next single goes to No. 1, he finds a way to get that season’s Air Jordan reissues.
