OFFSTAGE: Carrie Underwood Thought People Would Hate Her for Song

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that's happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

I know CMT Crossroads is all about bringing the music of two genres together. But sometimes, what I love even more than that is the conversation about that music. So on Saturday night (Feb. 4), when Carrie Underwood and Steven Tyler sat down to talk about the emotions behind their songs, Underwood admitted she had been nervous that people would hate her for recording "Before He Cheats." She says, "I remember at that time -- because that was right after Idol -- we're on the road, and then I get this song. And I'm like, 'People are going to hate me for singing this song.' They're gonna be like, 'Oh, my gosh, we can't listen to her album. She's bad, and I can't let my children listen to this.' Finally I was just like, 'You know what? I like this song. I would turn this song up on the radio, so I'm just gonna go for it.'" She admits that going for it paid off for her, and Tyler agreed. He told Underwood he realized the difference between rock music and country: "You really go for the heart and the jugular of true emotions which is real. It's real."
