OFFSTAGE: American Idol vs. The Voice

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

Remember Simon Cowell? The mean judge from American Idol? Well, guess what. He’s still kind of mean. He was on Extra, chatting about all the changes on the show he recently created, The X Factor, and what’s going on with all the recent firings (and who would for sure not be judging in the next season). But when they ask Cowell about The Voice, you’d think a grown man would say something politically correct about how it’s good to have other talent shows on the air because it creates awareness and healthy competition and all that. But what he says is this: “I would ask how many records have they made, how many artists have they discovered? That’s where we have to be different on the judging panel. It’s very important that you have people on the panel that have actually signed and made artists successful all over the world, not just have made hit records yourself,” Cowell said of The Voice‘s Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green and Christina Aguilera. Do you think Cowell is on to something? Is it more important for a judge to be a successful artist, or a successful artist maker?
