OFFSTAGE: The Idea Behind Lady Antebellum’s Prom Contest

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

I had a tea party with Lady Antebellum on Friday (March 9). Not that kind of tea party. It was more like a small party, and there was tea. (The band and the Lipton brand are working together on a “drink positive” campaign.) And while I was at this party, I had a chance to ask everyone about this new Own the Prom Night contest . “It was Hillary’s idea,” Dave Haywood told me about the video contest. The winner gets Lady A to perform at his or her prom, which basically means everyone at that prom is a winner. When I ask what they thought about going from a gorgeous arena stage to a small high school gymnasium stage, Charles Kelley was all for it. “I think that’s actually what will make this so cool, you know,” he said. Plus, as Kelley says on the band’s website, he’s a phenomenal dancer. The contest deadline is March 16, so if you want your prom to be unforgettable, charge the batteries on your video cameras and start shooting today.
