OFFSTAGE: Carrie Underwood’s Need for Time Outside the Celebrity Bubble

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

There’s a reason why you don’t always see Carrie Underwood out on the road. She needs to decompress, change things up and just get out from inside that celebrity bubble. That’s what she said in a recent radio interview when she talked about taking time off. “I was still a busy person,” she said. “I was just busy in a different way.” She added that for her, it was important to break out of the routine. “I feel like so many people get stuck,” she explained. “And they write, they get songs together, they make an album, they go on tour. They write, they get songs together, they make an album, they go on tour. I just wanted to change things up. I, like a lot of people who are creative, kind of just need to step away. I can’t have stuff to write about if I don’t have a life. If I talk to people and get out there and hang out with friends and hang out with my husband, I feel like I have better things to bring to the table.” Besides what it did for her songwriting, one of the best things about taking time off with her husband Mike Fisher last year was just remembering what it’s like to just be normal. Underwood says she does not always want to be inside the celebrity bubble. “It’s fun sometimes,” she admits. “But for your heart, you need to step away and just be real.”
