OFFSTAGE: When Keith Urban Speaks, His Wife Cries

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

Nicole Kidman doesn’t cry every single time she hears Keith Urban’s voice. But after his three-week vocal rest and his surgery, hearing him speak again moved her to tears. And, she says, it brought them even closer. “All of those things make you closer. It was sort of profound: to go without his voice, and then to finally hear his voice. What if he sounded different? I was there for his first words, and then we cried,” she told W magazine. “How many people experience their husband’s first words? If that doesn’t bring you closer, you’re not breathing.” Kidman described those interminable weeks of quiet as three weeks of no laughing, no coughing, no sneezing. No sound at all. “He could write things down, and he would scribble away. You can still fight when someone can’t talk,” she said. “When he disagreed with me, he would write, ’This is unacceptable.'” I hope Kidman saved all his notes in a scrapbook so they can look back on them and laugh.
