OFFSTAGE: Who Will Write Us a Hockeytonking Song?

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

This is my favorite new word — hockeytonking. I have no idea who made it up, but it blends two of my favorite things: hockey (I have kissed the Stanley Cup, just so you know) and country music. So it’s all good. I think the word has something to do with the fact that the Nashville Predators are in the NHL playoffs this year and the fact that country stars love cheering them on. The Tennessean newspaper in Nashville has a rundown of who has been backing the Preds and how. Dierks Bentley is planning on going to the second-round games. Martina McBride has been done a little intermission concert. Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman were seen wearing the free fan T-shirts last week. Barbara Mandrell is a season ticket holder and, of course, the ultimate hockey wife is Carrie Underwood since her husband Mike Fisher was traded from the Ottawa Senators to the Preds. And just how loyal of a fan is she? “I would start canceling stuff. I’m not going to lie. I do NOT cancel things ever. We are always good about making plans, keeping plans, and I don’t mind working … but I would cancel things for the Stanley Cup,” Underwood admitted. Now if we could just get someone to use the word hockeytonk in a song. “Hockeytonk Badonkadonk?” “You Can’t Take the Hockeytonk Out of the Girl”? “Hockeytonk Women?”

Alison makes her living loving country music. She's based in Chicago, but she's always leaving her heart in Nashville.
