OFFSTAGE: Zooey Deschanel to Play Loretta Lynn in New Version of Coal Miner’s Daughter

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

I’m with Loretta Lynn on this one. Ever since I heard Zooey Deschanel sing “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” in the film, Elf, I knew her voice could take her places. Like, Butcher Holler, Ky. (I’ve actually had a girl crush on Deschanel since I first saw her in Almost Famous more than a decade ago.) Lynn has now asked Deschanel to play her on Broadway in a musical version of Coal Miner’s Daughter. She brought Deschanel onstage Thursday night (May 10) at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium to make the announcement. “Well, there’s a little girl backstage that’s going to do the play of Coal Miner’s Daughter on Broadway. Zooey, where you at honey?” Lynn said. “Are you going to help me sing ’Coal Miner’s Daughter’?” Deschanel did, saying that this was a great honor and called Lynn her hero. I’m not so sure how deep Deschanel’s country roots go, but I do know that she is all about music (when she’s not acting on her hilarious sitcom, New Girl) because on her HelloGiggles website , she says of herself, “Deschanel writes music, sings and acts on screens, small and big. She is a co-founder of hellogiggles. She is one half of the indie folk band She & Him . She dances, too, but just for fun.” No word yet on who will play Mooney “Doolittle” Lynn. Any suggestions?
