OFFSTAGE: Carrie Underwood on the Bible Belt-ness of Country

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

When Glamour magazine asked Carrie Underwood how she felt about launching her career with a song about Jesus (“Jesus, Take the Wheel” ), she said it never occurred to her to worry. Country music, she explained, just has a Bible Belt-ness about it and that she’s not the first person to sing about God, Jesus and faith. Nor will she be the last. As for day-to-day religion, it definitely sounds like it’s a big part of Underwood’s life. “Every Wednesday, my husband and I have a study group with our friends. I attend church. We try to devote time in the morning, say a prayer,” Underwood said. “I’m not a big reader, though. I have to feel it, hear it, touch it be involved in it.”

Alison makes her living loving country music. She's based in Chicago, but she's always leaving her heart in Nashville.
