OFFSTAGE: Carrie Underwood Brings Periwinkle Glam to White Carpet

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

As if Carrie Underwood didn’t look stunning enough Sunday (May 20) when she performed “Blown Away” at the Billboard Music Awards, I just found photos of her stroll down the red (or, white, in this case) carpet with husband Mike Fisher by her side. She was wearing something too beautiful to even be called a dress. It was more like a periwinkle cloud of Oscar de la Renta ruched and swirled tulle and ribbon. And then that little pink clutch covered end to end with pale blue gems? So, so gorgeous. Other stand-out looks I loved included Taylor Swift in her very grown-up long red Elie Saab gown and Zooey Deschanel in a cute silver shift dress from Moschino. She looked more Twiggy than Loretta Lynn, who she is getting ready to play in the Broadway version of Coal Miner’s Daughter, but still she ranks high for her brand of adorkableness. Then there was Miley Cyrus, who was barely dressed at all in just a white Jean Paul Gaultier double-breasted tuxedo coat. (It was the coat that was double-breasted. Although, the same could be said for Cyrus, whose breasts were both there and both very apparent in the low-cut jacket-turned-dress.) But while she probably had more flesh than Gaultier on her, her whole look with the back-combed hair and ankle-strap stilettos just worked. And what kind of a white carpet would it be without a little Bieber? Justin Bieber looked perfectly hip layering a leatherish bomber jacket over a plain white T-shirt, slouchy black pants and just enough bling (wallet chain, lariat necklace and bracelet) to call himself a heartthrob rock star.
