OFFSTAGE: Tim McGraw Does Verses From “The Book of John”

A song titled “The Book of John” sounds like it should be a gospel song, doesn’t it? But it’s not. It’s a country song. And more specifically, a Tim McGraw country song.

He performed the brand new ballad at a small backstage pre-show event on Saturday (July 7), literally just minutes before he took the big stage at Chicago’s Soldier Field. McGraw and his six-man band started with “Red Rag Top” and “Illegal,” both from his 2002 Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors album.

When it came time to do the third and last song of his pre-show set, McGraw told the invitation-only crowd that “The Book of John” was his favorite song on his upcoming album. There’s still no release date set for that album and McGraw wasn’t giving away many details. In fact, he admitted he doesn’t talk much at all, unless you were to ask his wife Faith Hill and his teenage daughters, who would tell you he talks all the time.
