Grace Potter told me all about Tim McGraw’s workout regime when I caught up with her after her set at the Chicago stop of the Brothers of the Sun tour. But let’s face it. Whatever workout she’s doing is really working out. When I asked, I expected some P90X or Pilates-every-morning answer. But she admitted she just dances. “I just dance. I dance all the time,” she told me. “I’m almost constantly moving.” She also said she likes to hike the stairs at the arenas her band is playing for the exercise and to get a sense of where she is. But she was quick to add that she doesn’t like talking about her looks. “There’s a lot of things we do as a band that deserve more credit than just my legs. [The Nocturnals] are not my backing band. We’re a band.”
As for her legs, which do tend to get a lot of attention, she says she shows them off not because she’s trying to be sexy. She just doesn’t like a lot of clothes on her skin. “I hate long pants. I don’t like being in clothing. Especially playing hot festivals. I realized how little clothing you need. It’s not intentional. It’s just about comfort. I see the guys in the band in jeans and vests and think, ’God, it would be so much easier if we could all just be naked onstage,” she said. But back to Potter’s stay-sexy secrets. Besides the dancing and being crazy about Kashi cereal and Kind bars, Potter has three products she adores: baby powder for her hair and skin, Lierac body oil from Paris and blotting sheets.
