OFFSTAGE: Keith Urban Defines Shine Blockers

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

“I always wish I’d had more mentors, better mentors, wiser mentors, people who were proper professional working musicians to guide me as I was coming up.” This is what Keith Urban told GQ magazine in Australia about why he said yes to The Voice. And to be a better, wiser mentor, he knows not to be what he calls a shine blocker. That’s someone with negative energy. “I shine-block myself all the time. Negativity and doubt are always creeping into my life and having to be kept at bay,” he admits to the magazine. “Thankfully, [wife Nicole Kidman] is great at calling me on it, and our marriage is at the stage where she doesn’t have to say anything. I hear myself prattling on with negative crap, and her loaded silence shuts me up.” So his personal mission on The Voice was to “offer tiny yet crucial bits of advice and guidance or direction on how to dodge the bullets I danced with.” When the issue comes out next week, I hope he elaborates on those bullets he danced with.
