OFFSTAGE: Blake Shelton Trampled by Turtle Tweet

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that's happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

Two of the world's funniest people, Ellen DeGeneres and Blake Shelton, are at odds over a little turtle tweet. It started a few days ago when Shelton wrote, "Does anyone know if the Eastern Box turtle is protected in Oklahoma? If so I didn't just swerve to the shoulder of the road to smash one."

It got more than 600 retweets. But all kinds of people replied with angry words for Shelton, who replied that he tried to give the turtle CPR and then shared a heated back-and-forth with someone called @turtlefeed. Again, all just joking.

But after the backlash got to be a little too much for Shelton, he wrote an apology. "Ok. Now that 'Turtle-Gate' is over I want to apologize for my ignorant joke. I never ran over a turtle. It wasn't even possible," he said.

But then yesterday, DeGeneres got involved. She wrote to Shelton, "Here's what's funny: knock-knock jokes. Here's what's not funny: animal cruelty." All he could say to that was, "For god sakes... Now Ellen?!!"
