(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)
Just when you think one Bachelor Pad 3 contestant is too cold-hearted to fall in love, cue the country music and bring on the cheesy Southern T-shirts and, voila, love is in the air. That’s my takeaway from Monday’s (Aug. 20) Bachelor Pad 3 , the place where eliminated contestants from previous Bachelor and Bachelorette seasons come together for a little romance and a lot of cash. The winner takes home $250,000.
Granted, the show is a sort of novel spin-off idea. But what bothered me about this week’s episode was the gratuitous addition of country music when former Hooters waitress Blakely Jones had her overnight date with Tony Pieper. Gratuitous, I think, because when Pieper turns on the Jeep’s “radio,” it just so happens to have a country song called “Don’t Take That Long.” It’s an all right song, but it just felt so staged. Because the singer of that song, Wes Hayden, himself is a former contestant on both the Bachelorette and Bachelor Pad 1. And I don’t know about you, but I like my reality TV to have a little bit of reality. To top it off, when Jones got back from the date, she had a Hot Topic shirt on that said, “Southern Drawls Are Sexy Y’all.”
So what do you think about this song from Hayden? Was it country enough to change Jones into a likeable potential country girl, especially since she is safe for at least one more week ? Or is the whole thing just incestuous reality-show spin?
