OFFSTAGE: Toby Keith on Rare Breed of Beer-Drinking Girls

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

Wait a minute. I could’ve sworn that Toby Keith liked whiskey girls. Remember, the ones he described in “Whiskey Girl,” when he said “beer just makes her turn up her nose”? Well, times change. And with them, Keith’s taste in girls’ taste. That whiskey song is almost nine years old, so maybe it’s just a case of out with the old and in with the new. On “I Like Girls That Drink Beer,” he’s now singing about how he likes girls who drink beer. And not only that, but the track list for his upcoming album — Hope on the Rocks — includes “Cold Beer Country,” “Beers Ago” and a few other drinking songs. As for the girls doing the beer-drinking, Keith told CMT Radio that he likes them because they are rare. “I think she just makes a statement because you don’t see many. Most of the time it’s an umbrella. You just don’t see a girl drink with the guys, so it was just funny to me when you see that all the time,” he said. “It used to be more common and now it has gotten where it isn’t.”
