OFFSTAGE: Thomas Rhett and Jesus Walk Into a Bar

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

Thomas Rhett has this great new song, “Beer With Jesus.” And every time I hear it, I wonder where I would take Jesus for a cold one. Probably Joe’s Bar in Chicago. And probably on a night Rhett was playing. But if Rhett could actually live out the song, he told CMT Radio exactly where he’d take Him to ask all those questions. (“How’d you turn the other cheek to save a sorry soul like me? Have you been there from the start? How’d you change a sinner’s heart? And is heaven really just beyond the stars?”) Rhett says, “If Jesus was here today walking in the flesh like He was back when He was here, I mean, I would probably take him down to the Flying Saucer [near downtown Nashville] and order up a Newcastle and just pick his brain about life and ask him if I’m doing all right and ask him how some of the people in my life that are close to me that have died, how they’re doing in heaven.” I haven’t seen the video yet, but I loved Rhett’s first one (“Something to Do With My Hands” ), so I can’t wait to see this one. I wonder if anybody got to portray Jesus.
