OFFSTAGE: Kix Brooks’ Fifty Shades of Road Life

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

I’m so glad Kix Brooks and his wife Barbara stay in touch when he’s on the road. But knowing that she’s up at 2 a.m., reading the erotic novels in the Fifty Shades book series? That just makes me feel like a voyeur after watching the couple text back and forth in his new video for “Bring It on Home.” Take a look at their conversation, noting Kix’ fondness for double question marks and exclamation marks.

Hey U still up??

Ya, just reading. Can’t get to sleep.

What cha reading?

50 shades :-) :-) How was your show?

Another good one! It’s still fun — miss u though!!

Miss you, too. :(

Why don’t u come out on the next run??

I’ll check, but I think I’ve got that horse show in Fort Worth then.

Okay, maybe I can fly down after my Chicago show!!

That would be great! I’ll make it “Worth” your while. :)

I know you would!

Yeah, we’re both due for a break — no phones!

I wouldn’t mind a little time in wine country either!!

I really don’t care where as long as we’re together.

Love u too — sweet dreams!!

BRING IT ON HOME, BABY!

ON THE WAY!!

Now, knowing how most men feel about the books — that they make any and all women feel much more, um, amorous — I’m surprised Brooks didn’t cancel his shows and fly home right after that first 50 Shades text. But the whole virtual conversation does give the video a big dose of reality about how tough it must be to be away from the one you love.

Alison makes her living loving country music. She's based in Chicago, but she's always leaving her heart in Nashville.
