OFFSTAGE: Martina McBride Shares Slim Secret With Shape

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

Martina McBride is always a reliable resource with tips for staying in shape. I mean, look at her. She has a perfectly slim figure and always looks like a million bucks.

So when Shape magazine asked McBride what her diet and exercise routines are like now, I had to devour every word. And here’s what I learned: To be as healthy as McBride, you should eat everything in moderation, walk when you can and do some yoga. It’s common sense, and yet, sometimes it helps hearing it from her.

She told the magazine, “Some days I do well and I eat really healthfully, but I don’t think we should deprive ourselves of anything, so some days I indulge and give in to cravings. I believe everything in moderation, but breakfast is important. I have two hard-boiled or scrambled eggs with whole-wheat toast and try to get some fruit in there.” (But she admits that she does crave cheeseburgers every now and then.)

For snacks, McBride chooses fruit, yogurt, cheese, crackers and almonds. And for exercise, she sounds like she does it all. “I just took a little break, so right now I’m starting again a couple of times a week doing cardio and weight training. I do yoga, lunges, crunches, things like that for 40 minutes twice a week,” she said. “For cardio I usually do the elliptical, treadmill, or walking. If it’s a nice day, I like to walk outside around Radnor Lake.”

It sounds like a lot of hard work. But like Cher used to say in those old health club commercials, “Face it. If it came in a bottle, everyone would have a good body.”

Alison makes her living loving country music. She's based in Chicago, but she's always leaving her heart in Nashville.
