OFFSTAGE: Blake Shelton's Not-So-Family (But So Funny) Christmas

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that's happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

I'm starting to think that maybe Blake Shelton should quit his day job. I mean, he's got a wonderful voice, but he might also literally be the funniest man alive. And that's never been more obvious than on his Not-So-Family Christmas special that aired Monday (Dec. 3). He opened the show with "The Christmas Song," but he was ticked off about his elf outfit and the choir of elves. So a fight broke out. Then he told the audience not to sing along during the performances. Then he read to a kindergarten class and reluctantly took some questions. Kelly Clarkson came out to try to out-sing Shelton. Then he brought out his biggest influence -- his mom Dorothy Shackleford (who looks like she could be his sister) -- and said, "She pressures me to sing these songs that she writes." There was also a TV spot selling a fake version of his red chair from The Voice and a claymation skit with Shelton and Larry the Cable Guy drinking and reindeer hunting. There was a little cameo from Jay Leno. The whole hour may have been one of those you-had-to-be-there kinds of things, but trust me, it was hysterical. Oh, and there was music. Shelton sang "Let It Snow," Clarkson joined him for "There's a New Kid in Town" from his Cheers, It's Christmas album, Shackleford dueted with her son for the song they wrote together, "Time for Me to Come Home," and Reba McEntire sang "Oklahoma Christmas" with Shelton. He saved "the beautiful and talented Miranda Lambert" for last. She was in white dress and said, "I'm so glad to be here. Your Christmas special's awesome. And I just thought with all the craziness and comedy -- 'cause that's what you're great at -- there should be one sort of serious moment. So that's where I come in. I'm the wife. That's my job." Together, Mr. and Mrs. Shelton did "Home," the Michael Bublé song he rewrote just for Christmas.
