OFFSTAGE: Gary Allan: “You Gotta Tough It Out”

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

When you shoot a video in the pouring rain, Gary Allan told me, you just have to stay strong. And tell yourself you’re not freezing and miserable and trembling. “You gotta tough it out,” he said when I asked him how he got through the four-hour shoot for his “Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain)” video while rain machines soaked him, his band and their equipment. “And as soon as the rain turned off, we’d all sprint for the heaters and towels.”

Allan knows that when a lethal storm like Hurricane Sandy hits, you can tough it out, but you need help. And hope. So with Allan’s Donate to Download program, you can make a quick donation to the Red Cross for the Hurricane Sandy relief fund and get a free acoustic download of the song.

“This song is such a good hope song, and I knew it could shed light on that cause. When we were writing it, we made sure that the whole thing was up. And I remember Hillary [Lindsey] doing this gospel stomp thing on the patio,” he recalled of the writing session with Lindsey and Matt Warren. “We felt like everything could be positive and have it be where every word is something you could say to your kids. It’s just that kind of song of hope.”
