OFFSTAGE: Blake Shelton Pays Tribute to Newtown, Conn.

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

Blake Shelton obviously knows how to make the world laugh, but on Monday night (Dec. 17), he made us cry. Really, really cry. Did you see The Voice’s final live performance show ? Shelton, along with the other coaches, contestants and hosts opened the show with a candlelit tribute to all the grieving families in Newtown, Conn. They sang “Hallelujah,” with each one holding a card with the name and age of a victim of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Shelton held the card for Emilie Parker, 6, a first grader who was one of the 20 children killed last week. Parker’s father was one of the first of the victims’ parents to speak publicly about the shooting and about his daughter. “She was beautiful. She was blond. She was always smiling,” Robbie Parker said. “This world is a better place because she has been in it.”
