OFFSTAGE: Taylor Swift Lands “Never Ever” on Rolling Stone List

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

In Rolling Stone’s list of the 50 Best Songs of 2012 , a Taylor Swift song came in at No. 2. It should be noted that this is an all-genre list, not at all a country list. And only a few country songs even made the list, like Dwight Yoakam ’s “A Heart Like Mine” and Kacey Musgraves“Merry Go Round.”

So I think that means that the music magazine loves Swift’s song on a much grander scale. Why? Because it’s “a perfect three-minute teen tantrum about country girls getting mad at high-strung indie boys.” So country or not, that makes the tune worthy of a high place on their list.

“It’s a stadium-chant breakup song that may have less to do with the actual guy it’s about than with the massive raging-cowgirl audience Swift has led to the pinnacle of the music world,” it says. I agree with all that except maybe the “raging cowgirl” part. I know a whole bunch of Swift fans who are neither raging nor cowgirls.

So the only question I have after reading the Rolling Stone list is, did they love the song because it leans a little country? Or because it doesn’t?
