OFFSTAGE: Pistol Annies: Girl Power and Then Some

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

People make such a fuss over girl power. But the Pistol Annies? They are making a fuss over girlfriend power. At least, that’s the message I get when I read between the lines in the liner notes on their new album Annie Up. First, Miranda Lambert thanks her bandmates Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley because, with them, she says, “I get to be 12 forever, play dress up and sing in a hair brush! And do it all on a tour bus!” Monroe echoes that sentiment and even refers to the group as “sister wives” to Blake Shelton. But it’s Presley’s gratitude that really sums up how much good girlfriends matter. “Thank you for letting me sing, cuss, write, cry, talk about boys, drink, smoke, take my crazy meds, play guitar, laugh, bitch, exercise, play dress up, get homesick, create, hide, say and do inappropriate things, scream, dance, fall, make a fool of myself and shine like a diamond around you with wild abandon,” she says in the happiest run-on sentence I’ve ever read.
