Hunter Hayes Promises to Get "Crazy" for CMT Music Awards

"We've Been Wanting to Do This Kind of Thing for a While"

It's no surprise there was a large contingent of female fans straining to get a look at Hunter Hayes during the singer's rehearsal on Tuesday (June 4) for Wednesday night's 2013 CMT Music Awards.

Hayes, 21, who is nominated for three awards, including video of the year for "Wanted," was still buzzing with energy when we caught up with him after the rehearsal.

"It's great this is a crazy week for us," he said. "This is a big performance. We are really stoked about this. We've been wanting to do this kind of thing for a while and to finally get the chance to do it is pretty awesome. To get to play 'Crazy' ... it's the perfect song for being outdoors and gettin' crazy."

With the constant pressure he puts on himself to keep upping his live performance game, Hayes said he's glad to change things up for his audience.

"The fans are cool enough to want to come to show after show after show, and we basically just want to change it up," he said. "We want to keep it evolving, keep it changing. And it grows. The show will naturally change and grow, so the best things we can do is allow for that to happen. ... The shows are getting bigger and getting more fun, and that's thanks to you guys."

The craziness will continue this fall when Hayes embarks on his Let's Be Crazy tour as part of the 12th annual CMT on Tour. The tour will have the platinum-selling "Wanted" singer hitting the road Oct. 10 in Knoxville, Tenn. With rising country star Ashley Monroe as its opening act, the tour includes 21 stops in 24 cities, wrapping up Dec. 7 in Kansas City, Mo.

"It's gonna be a great summer, a great fall," Hayes promised. "We've got a massive show planned for the fall. So it's gonna be ... crazy, appropriately."

The 2013 CMT Music Awards show airs live from Nashville's Bridgestone Arena Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CMT and CMT.com.
